Week 1
First Day of School 8-8-16
The first day, I went with Mr. Miller and was
introduced to the workshop. There he showed us many tools including
a drillpress, metal sander, band saw, welder, and
materials we would be using later on in the year. Mr Miller expressed that saftey
is key for working in the shop. Many tools can hurt you
instantly and cause serious harm.
Tuesday 8-9-16
The second day of being
in Principals of Engineering, I went into the main classroom
with Dr. Neet. We learned about the class that we were in
with a powerpoint that he showed our group. After, we got
familiarized with each other by playing a name game. I am
also known as "Skip" now. Dr. Neat also has class rules:
Class Rules
Wednesday 8-10-16
We started our first Wednesday Challenge.
The class' project was to make a spaghetti bridge with dried
spaghetti and woodglue. My team is Jacob, Christian, and Jess.
Our design is to make a triangular prism with tiny pieces of
pasta going laterally across it. Unlike most Wendnesday Projects,
the spaghetti bridge is going to take our groups six days.
They are usually one day, but this one requires more thinking.
On Thursday we started back up on our bridge. we came up with
more ideas and are starting to build our first bridge.
Thursday 8-11-16
Today we continued to work in our bridge. My group continued to make
our first bridge by glueing more spaghetti sticks together.
Friday 8-12-16
On Friday,
we started to learn how to make our website. I am not sure how I will make everything
after looking at a really good example.
Week 2
Monday 8-15-16
On Monday, we continued
to make our websites. Since my computer was mixed up with
someone elses, i had to get e new one. Dr. neat didn't have any
at the time so I used his and helped demonstrate more on
how to create our website. I am now labtop number 2.
Tuesday 8-16-16
Tuesday, the next
day, we continued working on our websites. I was worling on typing more
and editing my website.
Wednesday 8-17-16
Wednesday, our groups continued
making the spaghetti bridge. Some parts of our brigde got cracked so our
team is regluing it. Also, we started working on the next prototype
for the Wednesday project. Our design is to have long strands of spaghetti
going across in a sort of spiderweb formation.
Thusday 8-18-16
Thurday, our class is continued
on making websites, and now learning how to put in the Wednesday challenge
form
Friday 8-19-16
Today I learned how to put my website up on th web. It took a while because there were
many others in the class doing that
Monday 8-22-16
I experienced sketch-up today and learned how to export a picture.
The picture we tried to export was a skeleton. Not a solid image.
Tuesday 8-23-16
Today we workked on getiing more pictures on our website. I now
have both pictures next to each other.
Wednesday 8-22-16
My team continued to work on making the bridge made out of spaghetti
no matter what we doing our bridge keeps cracking in small places.
Thrsday 8-22-16
Today I worked on typing more on my website and uploading it onto Filezilla
Friday 8-23-16
Today we learned more about the JPL Invention challege. Mr. Wilton,
sat in and watched us learn more about the JPL IC. HE works for making
movie cameras and other machines to film movies. He has won two academy
awards for that. This is his webpage:
Mr. Wilton's Website
Monday 8-29-16
Today we did touch ups on our website. I am catching up and
trying to complete everything that is needed. I only need to have pics
of the pasta bridge which I don't know how to put on. Other wise I
need to find a backround for my website. Lastly, I need to put everything
up on Filezilla.
Tuesday 8-30-16
We continued to work on bridges and built our final one that would be tested
for tomorrow. We went with the design that we last used with the spaghettis going across
diagnally.
Spahetti bridge challenge form:
Spaghetti Bridge Wednesday Challege form
Wednesday 8-31-16
toda we tested our bridge and held a a lot of water compared to the bridge's
weight. After we hurried to build another bridge for te competition tomorrow.
I think our bridge needs another day to have its glue dried.
Thursday 9-1-16
Today was the big day. It is a half day and we are testing our bridegs to see
how much they can hold. Our bridge held a total of 43 grams and weiged 38... not so
good. I was right about our bridge and it needing more time to dry. Oh well, what
can you do.
Tuesday 9-6-16
Today we finished the wednesday challenge forms. We put those up onto our
websites. That is all we did since people got stuck with loggins.
Wednesday 9-7-16
I am excited fpr my second wenesday challenge! Our challenge is to design
a robot that can tell the difference between a dog and a cat without harming it.
We have three sentences to describe our robot. Here is the link to the Wednesday
challenge form.
Robot Design WC
Thurday 9-8-16
So today we had Mr. Wilton come in today and look at the JPL invention challenges
to see where they were at and what they need to work on.
Friday 9-9-16
Monday 9-12-16
Sketch up is pretty cool. Today we designed our own little city on it. Dr Neat compliment me
on my statagy of building it when I had little rectangles drawn out first and then pulled them
up into 3D images.
Here it is:
Tuesday 9-13-16
Today, we continued to go onto sketch-up and we made a Jenga Block that was the actual size
by putting in measurements. It was a little tricky at first but then i got the hang of it.
After that, I was called to go with Mr. Miller to go and get set up for the saftey online course
that would be emailed to us.
Wednesday 9-14-16
Wednesday challenge day!!! Our challenge was to make a wooden block to as close as 2 inches
as possible with only hand tools. Our main problem was cutting straight so we clamped a piece of metal
to our little block. Then we had cut too much off. Thanfully we have tomorrow to work on it and start
over with another block.
Thursday 9-15-16
So now we continue trying new ideas and trying to get as close as we can to two inches. Our last idea that
we tried was to cut it down to almost two inches but leave a little so we could sand it down to 2 inches
with sand paper. When Mr. Miller measured ours, our group had the closest measurement grouped together for each
side. Nobody won the Wednesday challenge but it was very fun doing it with my group.
Here is the WC form:
Wood Block WC
Friday 9-16-16
Today we had a discussion about the JPL challenge and had more ideas a nd imputs on
designs for the group working on it. Some of the ideas we tested on rally platform. Lets say that they need some more
work on them.
Monday 9-19-16
Today everybody logged onto the website for the saftey instructions for being in the workshop.
trouble because I accidentally clicked on the wrong link. After a while, Mr. Miller helped me out and guided
me to the right place.
Tuesday 9-20-16
Today we had a guest speaker from skillify! I have already met her since she was in my chemistry
class last week. After she presented, we had a little time to work on our websites.
Wednesday 9-21-16
Today we used PVC pipe cut in half to get a marble into a paper bag for a WC!!! It was both exciting
and hard because it was one half of the class versus the other. Team work was key in this challenge too.
Our team won by getting the marble into the bag by going slowly and communicating effectivly.
Here is the link:
Marble PVC Pipe WC
Thursday 9-22-16
Today we watched Alex in my class put up a youtube video on his website.
He had some videos on the JPL invention challenge. I think I will put a up a video
later on.
Friday 9/23/16
Today we had the JPL Crew come in and talk more about thier projects.
They are becoming more and more better than before. Mr. Wilton had some great advise
Monday 9/26/16
Today we were informed on grades and how they would work for this class. I know that I need to make sure that
all of my pictures and links working.
Tuesday 9/27/16
Today before class started, Dr. Neat showed us a video of the rocket "Falcon 9".
The video was taken in March of 2016 and the rocket had exploded. A man in the
video was explaining baout what might have caused that to happen.
Wednesday 9/28/16
Today we have a WEDNESDAY CHALLENGE!!! Our challenge this time is to build an arch bridge out of one material
which I think is pretty hard. So foar we have researched what is an arch bridge and started thinking about what we
could build it out of.
Thursday 9/29/16
So now we are still working on our project since we have until next wednesday to build. Next thursday we will test it.
We asked Dr. Neat if we could build itout of legos but he said that they couldn't interlock so that idea was out. I then thought
of useing half pieces of tennis balls to build our bridge.
Friday 9/30/16
Today we had the JPL Crew come inand talk more about thier projects. they had sketchups and had some physical designs that they
tested without water. I wasn't able to work on my website during that time becasue I share on with two of the JPL people so they
were useing it for thier presentations.
Monday 10/3/16
Today we continued on our bridges. I brought in some tennis balls and we cut hem in class with some Xacto knives or boxcutters, it
depends if you ask Kirk. We made our decision to make it out of tennis balls and so we started to fill out our from HERE for our bridge.
Tuesday 10/4/16
So today we worked on cutting more tennis balls. Thats about it. Not very exciting, right?
Wednesday 10/5/16
All we need now is some more tennis balls to make our bridge. The picture below is a smaller version with less balls.
PPPIIICTTTUUURRREEE here
Thursday 10/6/16
Today we tested out our bridge. We don't know how far our bridge was since Dr Neat didn't
tell us. We'll get it tomorrow. I think we got first for the bridge, knock on wood.
Friday 10/7/16
Today the scores of the bridges were on the on the overhead. Our team got 4th, almost 3rd by .20. The winning
team showed how they designed their bridge. After that the JPL Crew talked about their designs. Most of the groups
are about 65% done.
Monday 10/10/16
Dr neat showed us a video call CYMATICS: Science vs Music that Cole showed him. It was about music and how the music changed
the science to what the music was playing. After we watched the video some of the kids wet into the
shop with Mr. Miller and the others were with Dr. Neat and worked on sketchup. On sketchup we went over
how to build a jenga block. I find it esay to make one now. After that we made our block into a component so it
won't move around. Lasstly we made our own stairway to heaven with the blocks.
Tuesday 10/11/16
Today we continued to work on sketchup. We went over how to muve and make things components. I built
a chocolate bar using the copy and paste with the components I made. After that, we learned how to make a real
true jenga block with curved edges.
Wednesday 10/12/16
Today we had a WEDNESDAY CHALLENGE!!! We had to build a house out of cards. Our team got a 3 way tie
for 5th at 6.5.
Here is the link for the Wednesday challenge.
WEEK 13
Monday 10/24/16
Today we talked about the websites and about some people who hadn't updated it along with
the Straw WC. I was one of the people who didn't have my website updated at all for a couple reasons.
After we talkied about the groups for the Wesdy Challenge. It concluded to be that a smaller
group would work better than a large group. Thankfully I am now able to work on my website at
home.
Lesson Learned: Always update your website whenever you can.
Here are all the picture that were upposed to go into my last website update.

Tuesday 10/25/16
Today we posted the WC of the Straws. Click here to see it.
After, I started a sketch up of a Lego Duplo block. It is on 10/27/16 entry. I am still
really bummed about the website and not being able to upload it.
Wednesday 10/26/16
Today we have once again, A WEDNESDAY CHALLENGE!!! our challenge was to estimate how many
pieces of candy corn are on Dr. Neat's 8.5 by 11 piece of paper. WE didn't win this challenge,
and I am still a bit butthurt about it, although I had some fun with it. Here is my WC Form.
Candy Corn WC
Thursday 10/27/16
Today I continued on the LEGO Duplo block Sketch up. It was pretty easy to make. I alo made the
WC Form for the Wednesday Challenge for yesterday. Then I worked on my website for the rest of the
period
Friday 10/28/16
You guessed it!!! Today we had Mr. Wilton come in once again to talk to the JPL Group. Some
Groups were a bit behind, so they are now working really hard to get everything done before
the challenge day. Which is in one month! The time has really gone by fast so far
with this school year.
WEEK 14
Monday 10/31/16
Today is Halloween!!! Dr. Neat scared some kids today by having a robot be activated by motion
sense! nIt was very funny. After that he showed us his bridge presentation, and how we would be
doing one with a partner. My partner for this is John. He is cool. His website is here.
We are going to be doing the Royal Gorge Bridge in Colorado. This is what it looks like.
Tuesday 11/1/16
Toooooday is a new month, NOVEMBER! We are working on sketchup today of the Lego Block. I
already did that so instead I worked on the bridge and website. The picture of the Lego is above on
the date 10/27/16.
Wednesday 11/2/16
Today we had a Wednesday Challenge! I was a judge so I helped by going around to tables while they were making
thier sketchups of the letter "E." Then I would tell David to come and retrieve thier sketchup. That was basically it
since we wouldn't have enough time to redistribute the sketchups for the other team.
The results are later on in the website but here is the WC Form.
Letter E WC
Thursday 11/3/16
Today we continued the WC. I was in charge of cutting pieces of carboard and then handing out the pieces for groups
to construct the letter. I thinks it's really cool to be a judge.
Friday 11/4/16
Today we had the JPL people come in and show their machines to us. We watched them try and get the most amount of water in the
target. Other thatn that we just worked on our websites.
WEEK 15
Monday 11/7/16
Today we went over grades and websites. I got a perfect score on it and am very happy. Thats about it. Then we worked on our websites
Tuesday 11/8/16
Today we worked on the websites
Wednseday 11/9/16
Today was the Wednesday challenge. The challenge of today was to see if two weights, one was
one kilogram, and the other was unkown. We had to decide if the objects were the same weight.
here is the WC form.
Weights WC
Thursday 11/10/16
Today we let the groups finish up the Es by making their designs from another group out of
cardboard. I helped out by cutting pieces of cardboard for the groups to create their Es. Then we took the
Es and tried to score them but we didn't have time to.
Friday 11/11/16
Today the JPLers came in and they talked about their inventions to us. Then Mr. Wilton asked questions
and shared his opinion on their projects. I also worked on my website a bit. Thats all.
WEEK 16
Monday 11/14/16
Today we had a day to work on our websites, but I had to finish judging the E's from two weeks
ago. It took a fair amount of time to do but we finished. Here is the link to the results.
E Final Results
Tuesday 11/15/16
Today I went into the shop with Mr. Miller and the original group for the safety test to make
something. Literally, we were going to learn(since it is the best way to) by making what ever we wanted
wanted, just in a reasonable size. Our group decided on making a 1 foot by 8 inch by 4 inch box with a top
on it along with a drawer on the bottom. We only have little sketches of it so here is my very own sketch up
of it.
Wednesday 11/16/16
Today was a Wednesday challenge!!! Our task was to have to pieces of metal and haev them stuck
together with some adhesive and see who's would hold the most water. My group's choice was to use
super glue as our adhesive. We had also though about something that none of the other groups had thought
about: filing the surfaces of both pieces of metal and then putting on the glue. That would increase
the suface area tension. Then we tested it and it held 8 lb.s. It could hold more it was just that
we needed to have a more controlled way to handle the water so it wouldn't spill when the two pieces
fell apart. This was also the case for many other groups so we will continue tomorrow.
Thursday 11/17/16
Today we are working on our websites. I am going to work on the Wednesday challenge form for the Wednesday Challenge
we did yesterday. Sadly we aren't continuing the wednesda challenge becasue the sheer force to break apart the two
pieces of metal with the super glue on it was about 111 lbs. Here is the WC form
Sheer Force WC
Friday 11/18/16
Today I finished up my WC worksheet form and then uploaded my website.
After that, the JPL Crew showed us their final designs. We went outside to see them
in action since the Challenge day is tomorrow. Yeah that's about it.
WEEK 16
Monday 11/28/16
Today we went onto sketch-up and learned how to rotate a shape or something.
Then we remade our arch bridge in sketch-up. Here it is.
Tuesday 11/29/16
Today we had the JPL team talk to us about the JPL invention challenge.
One group got disqualified, and then one had a little problem which led them to fail,
and another group lost a too much water so they got a penalty for 15 seconds on their original
time.
Wednesday 11/30/16
Today we started another wednesday challenge!!! Our challenge is to build the tallest structure out of
marshmellos, pretzel sticks, and graham crackers. We only made the sketch up today but tomorrow we will
continue it. Here is the WC Form
Tower WC
Thursday 12/1/16
Today we finished up the wednesday challenge. We tried to make the structure that another group
gave to us but it failed since it was instructed in a weird way. Here is their structure and here is the picture.
Friday 12/2/16
Today we worked on our websites and then we watched some Mythbusters!!!
I finished almost what I needed to do on my website. I only needed to have the real life pictures but
I didn't email myself it before.
